Pictures

I have never posted a picture from the internet on this blog. That is until now. Today at lunch we enjoyed cupcakes for Lauren and Leanne's birthday. At the end of lunch this is how we looked.

We had frosting on noses, chins, cheeks, foreheads, even pants! I only wish I had my camera to commemorate the occasion! Even though we were covered in frosting like the piglets above, we had a great time!

We're going on a field trip!

That's right we will be going on a field trip on Wednesday, March 11th. We will be traveling to The Academy for Academics and Arts to attend a play titled "Fairy Tales: A Walk Through the Forest". Your child is bringing home a permission/information form today. Please sign the permission form and enclose you child's fee before Friday, March 6th.

Reading: This week we are beginning out new unit titled "Let's Explore." In this unit we hope to answer the question, "Where will our adventures take us?" The first story in this unit is the book Bunny Day. This story works in conjunction with our math topic for the week. The bunnies in the book are doing various chores and activities throughout the day. The book gives specific times and we will be learning how to tell time this week. Our AMAZING WORDS for this story are: chores, tidy, bustle, race, story and hungry. Sight words for this week are: that, are, and do.

Phonics: We will primarily focus on the sound made by the letter Hh. This is the sound hear at the beginning of the words hammer, hat, and house.

Math: We will be finishing up our chapter on money and time this week. This week we will be learning how to tell time to the hour. We will be focusing on using analog clocks, although we will do dome work with digital clocks.

Book Order: Your child has a book order form in their folder today. Please read the letter attached to the order form and return to school no later than Friday, February 27th.

Happy Birthday! This week we have four birthdays. A very special birthday wish goes out to Jalon (24th), Lauren and Leanne (26th), and Sadie (28th).

I like money...

to buy things at the store. Money, money, money. I always want more! This is the song we have been singing for the past few weeks. We are continuing to work on learning about money. Have your child sing the money song to you!

Reading and Phonics: This week we will be reviewing skills we have learned during our unit title Watch Me Change. We will review letter sounds, beginning and ending sounds, rhyming, and the vowels Aa, Ii, and Oo.

Math: We will continue to work on our chapter about money and time.

A short post for a short week. Never fear though, next week we will be back toa full load of work.

What's Up?

The answer to the above question is A LOT! We have a ton of things going on this week in our class. Our Valentine's Day party will be this Friday, February 13th at 1:30 in the afternoon. We will be enjoying ice cream sundaes with fresh fruit. As customary for the holiday we will exchange valentines within our class. Your child is bringing home a class list today to aide in the addressing of their valentines. The process of addressing valentines is a fun experience for children; it is also a wonderful exercise in handwriting. Please have your child bring his or her valentines to school on or before Friday. Also, happy birthday this week to Logan (10th)!

Reading:This week we will be reading the book Hide, Clyde! by Russell Benfanti. Our concept question for this book is: "How do chameleons change?" Our AMAZING WORDS for this book are: chameleon, jungle, pattern, skin, hide, and scampered. Our sight words for this week will continue to be they, of, and you.

Phonics: We will continue to work with the short sound of Oo. We will be listening for the /o/ sound not only at the beginning of words, but also in the middle of words. We will also introduce the sound made by the letter Zz.
Math: This week we will begin a new chapter titled Money and Time. In this chapter we will learn to recognize coins and their value. We will also learn about time, using a calendar and a clock.



Your child is bringing home a folder full of information today. This information includes: two papers regarding our new math chapter,information about our Valentine's Day celebration, two phonics stories for your child to practice reading at home, this week's Family Times, Chaffee Talent Show information, and cupcake sale information. Whew!

Happy Groundhog Day!

Happy Groundhog Day everyone! I am sad to report that we will be enduring six more weeks of winter. This month will be very busy for us. We have several events and birthdays to celebrate. The first of which is the Chaffee Sock Hop on Friday the 6th from 6-8 pm. Happy Birthday this month to: Ryan (6th), Logan (10th), Jalon (24th), Lauren and Leanne (26th), and Sadie (28th). Also, this month we will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Friday the 13th at 1:30pm. Please remember we will not be in school on the 16th as that is Teacher In-Service day.
Here is what is happening in our room this week:
Reading: This week we are reading the book Seeds by Ken Robbins. Our focus this week is on what seeds become. Our AMAZING WORDS this week are seeds, roots, pit, pod, stem, and sprouts. We will be learning the meaning of these words during our study this week. Our sight words this week will be they, you, and of.

Student Readers: The student readers used during small group instruction are online for your child to use in their reading practice. To access these books go to http://www.pearsonsuccessnet.com/ and use your child's username and password to login and read these books.

Phonics: This week we will be focusing on the short vowel sound of Oo. This is the sound heard at the beginning of the words otter, octopus, and ostrich.
Sight Words: These are the sight words that we have learned tis year. Please review these with your child at home. I, am, a, little, to, the, for, have, he, is, like, you, we, see, look, me, with, she, my, are, that, do, they, and of.
Math: This week we will be concluding our chapter on number patterns. We will review ordinal numbers, even and odd numbers, and counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
