December is here!

Wow! December is upon us. This month will be full of fun and exciting things in our classroom. As we have fun we will also be reviewing skills we have learned this semester. Please look on the back of your child's December calendar for a week-by-week summary.

This week will be a week of conclusions for us. We will be concluding our reading unit and our math chapter.

Reading: This week we will be reading the book Whose Garden Is It? by Mary Ann Hoberman. This is the final story in our unit about where animals live. In this story we will be learning about what lives in a garden environment. Our AMAZING WORDS this week are: garden, plant, soil, gardener, seed, and blossoms. Our sight words are he and for. Please review with your child all of the sight words we have learned so far this year: I, am, a, the, little, to, have, is, we, my, like, he, and for.

Phonics: We will continue with learning about the short /i/ sound. This is a very difficult sound for young readers, because it can be confused with the sound of short /e/. Some short /i/ words are: igloo, pig, milk, six, wig, and big.

Math: This week we will be concluding our chapter on geometry and fractions. This week we will be learning about fractions. We will focus on dividing objects into equal parts.

Family Holiday Glyph Project: In the upcoming weeks we will begin reviewing math concepts that we have learned during the year. One concept we have touched on is graphing. In the next few weeks we will be learning more about how information can be shared by using graphs. Another way to share information is through a glyph. A glyph is a way to convey information using pictures. In an effort to help our students learn more about graphs and glyphs we need your help. On Monday your child will be bringing home a "Family Holiday Glyph Project" packet. In this packet you will find a legend, a patterns sheet, and a piece of construction paper. Please help your child create his or her glyph using the legend and the patterns. You may attach the glyph to the construction paper. Glyphs are very simple to make, but tell you a great deal about the creator. Please return your child's glyph to school no later than Friday, December 5th. We appreciate your help with this project. If you have any questions, please let us know.
